About
Meridian Solar Canvas is a wall “sconce” made of stretched canvas in a handmade hard maple frame. The lighting strip behind the shade tracks the real-time position of the sun, shifts through blue hour and golden hour colors, and goes dark at night. No screen. No buttons. Just light moving slowly across the frame as the day passes.
The frame is hard maple, joined and finished by hand. The electronics are custom-wired. The solar math runs on a microcontroller tucked out of sight, running custom code.
It calculates sunrise and sunset times for your specific location using on-device solar position algorithms. No internet required after the initial time sync. It recalculates daily, tracking seasonal changes automatically. Plug it in, connect to WiFi once, and it runs on its own from that point forward.
Meridian is the first piece in the Future Objects collection. Objects that use technology to reconnect you with the natural world instead of pulling you away from it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it know where the sun is?
Meridian uses the NOAA solar position algorithm running on an ESP32 microcontroller. It calculates sunrise, sunset, and the sun's exact position from your latitude and longitude. No cloud service, no API calls, no subscription.Where can you ship to?
United States — all 50 states only for now. Sorry, EU! I’ll have an update on this soon.
Does it need internet?
Only for the initial time sync when you first plug it in. After that, it keeps accurate time internally and recalculates the sun position daily. If your WiFi goes down, it keeps running. How do I set my location?
On first setup, you connect to Meridian's WiFi network and enter your coordinates or zip code through a simple web interface. Takes about two minutes. After that, you never need to touch it again. What does it look like at night?
Dark. The LEDs turn off completely after the sun sets. No standby glow, no status lights. It's a quiet object on your wall until dawn.Does it handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Auto-detected and adjusted. Can I use it as a regular lamp?
Yes. Meridian runs on WLED, so you can switch to solid color mode, adjust brightness, or use any of WLED's built-in effects through the app on your phone. Meridian mode is the default. How big is it?
The frame is approximately 20 inches wide by 14 inches tall by 2 inches deep. Designed to be a presence on the wall without dominating the room. What's a "Future Object"?
Objects that embed technology invisibly in natural materials. No screens, no blinking LEDs, no interface clutter. Technology that connects you to something real rather than demanding your attention. Meridian is the first. More are coming.Specifications
